Hope-On-A-Star
We raise Shih Tzus in our home, where they are an integral part of our daily lives. The mothers have the joy of giving birth and nurturing their puppies under our careful supervision. When the time is right, the mothers naturally transition their puppies to kibble.
As the puppies grow, they enjoy socializing with other dogs, both young and old, providing them with plenty of playtime and interaction. Before leaving for their forever homes, each puppy receives a wellness check and their first set of vaccinations to ensure they are happy and healthy.

Caring for your New Shih Tzu Puppy:
A Guide for New Pet Parents
Bringing home a new Shih Tzu puppy is exciting, but it comes with responsibilities. Here’s a helpful list to guide you:
1. Preparing Your Home
• Puppy-proof your space: Remove hazards like wires, small objects, or toxic plants.
• Create a cozy area: Set up a designated sleeping and play area with a comfy bed, crate, or playpen.
• Stock up on essentials: Food and water bowls, puppy food, toys, leash, harness, and grooming supplies.
2. Feeding
• Choose the right food: Start with the food recommended by the breeder or vet to avoid stomach upset.
• Stick to a schedule: Feed your puppy 3–4 times a day.
• Provide fresh water: Ensure water is always available.
3. Training & Socialization
• Potty training: Take your puppy outside frequently—after meals, naps, and playtime. Use positive reinforcement.
• Basic commands: Teach simple commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.”
• Socialization: Expose your puppy to various people, pets, and environments to build confidence.
4. Grooming
• Brush regularly: Shih Tzus have long coats that need daily brushing to prevent mats.
• Bathing: Bathe your puppy every 2–4 weeks with a gentle dog shampoo.
• Eye care: Clean around their eyes daily to avoid tear stains and infections.
• Nail trimming: Trim nails regularly to prevent overgrowth.
5. Health Care
• Vet visits: Schedule vaccinations, deworming, and general check-ups.
• Flea and tick prevention: Consult your vet for safe options.
• Spaying/neutering: Plan to have your puppy de-sexed at the appropriate age.
6. Exercise & Playtime
• Daily activity: Provide short play sessions and walks suitable for their age and size.
• Mental stimulation: Offer chew toys and interactive toys to keep them engaged.
7. Love & Patience
• Bond with your puppy: Spend quality time cuddling and playing.
• Be patient: Puppies take time to learn routines and rules.
Bonus Tips
• Stay consistent: Puppies thrive on routine and clear expectations.
• Puppy supplies: Have poop bags, a crate, and a collar with ID tags ready.
• Ask for help: Reach out to us at Hope On A Star or vet if you have questions.
